Vantaa Energy and environmental technology company Doranova to collaborate in the concept study phase in the design of an innovative Biogas Plant

15.3.2022 Antti Myllärinen

Vantaa Energy will phase out fossil fuels in its energy production by 2026 and move towards carbon negativity by 2030. An important part of the Carbonnegative 2030 project is a biogas plant that will produce carbon dioxide-free biogas, mainly for transport.

Through Vantaa Energy’s Carbonnegative 2030 project plan, which consists of four main projects, the company will sequester more carbon dioxide from its operations than it releases into the atmosphere, thus moving towards carbon negativity in 2030. One of the four projects moving the company towards carbon negativity is the Biogas Plant, which is currently in the concept study phase. The study is being carried out in cooperation with Doranova, an environmental technology company specialising in biogas solutions. Doranova is working as a technology expert in the Biogas Plant project. The study phase is scheduled to be completed during 2022.

The biogas plant will play a significant role in Vantaa Energy’s progress towards carbon negativity by 2030. The aim is to build a carbon-free biogas plant. Conventional biogas production solutions generate a significant amount of bio-based carbon dioxide, which is cleaned out of the raw biogas during the production process and released into the atmosphere. The biogas plant designed by Vantaa Energy utilizes all the carbon dioxide generated in the process with the help of new technology, which means that no carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere during the process. The plant’s raw material feeds consist of separately collected bio-waste fractions and municipal waste bio-fractions. All waste heat generated in the process is recovered and distributed to homes and properties via the heating network.

The plant is scheduled to be commissioned in 2026.
