Today in the old station area of Lielahti stands a cosy residential area unlike less than 10 years ago when soil of the station area was severely contaminated by an old scrap yard. Doranova remediated Lielahti’s contaminated soil from mineral oil and heavy metals in 2004 by using on-site wet sorting technique, being the first one to use this specific technique in Finland.
When comparing to the traditional excavation (changing of the soil) wet sorting technique taking place on-site is ecological and more cost effective way to remediate the soil. Wet sorting technique also gives the opportunity to save gravel and minimize the use of space in landfills. The 16 000 tons of soil in Lielahti would have needed 800 truckloads if the soil would have been changed. When using the wet sorting technique only 20 truckloads of traffic was created.
