Doranova as the technology supplier and EPC contractor for the Viskaali Eco-Village biogas plant project in Muhos, 20 km east of Oulu.
The plant is part of a new circular-economy food production concept that utilizes manure and biowaste from the farm and nearby area – while simultaneously reducing methane emissions from beef production.
Project details
Commissioning year: 2024
Feedstocks: Cattle manure and regional biowaste; the reactor technology also tolerates high dry-matter content
Capacity: Approx. 34,000 t per year – ten times larger than conventional farm-scale plants
Gas production: Nearly 20 GWh of saleable biogas per year
Technology and implementation
-
The plant is based on high-load wet digestion using one large 4,250 m³ Solidferm reactor.
-
The design accounts for demanding feedstocks that require hygienization. The plant is equipped with two 8 m³ hygienization tanks and a heavy-duty heat exchanger.
-
Doranova’s delivery included the biogas plant’s process technology and thermal systems.
-
The project was carried out during 2023–2024.
Impact and benefits
Energy self-sufficiency: The plant increases Viskaali Farm’s energy independence and reduces the carbon footprint of waste management in the Oulu region.
Nutrient recycling: The produced digestate serves as an environmentally friendly fertilizer, replacing fossil-based alternatives.
