BioKymppi Oy biogas plant

BioKymppi's biogas plant located in Kitee, Finland is processing different sort of biodegradable waste and energy plants. By digesting organic raw materials the plant produces biogas from which the energy containing methane is refined to electricity and heat. The digesting residual is exploited as variety of fertilizers.

In 2010 Doranova delivered two times 160 kW CHP plant that produces electricity and heat for the plants own use and also for sale. We also designed and executed biogas pumping station that takes care of both the biogas plant’s gas pumping and the nearby landfill’s gas pumping. One of our principles is to help and take care of our customers for the whole life cycle of a plant so naturally in this case it includes maintenance and upkeep tasks concerning the equipment we have delivered. The digestion process and biogas reactor (digester) were designed and delivered by our German partner in cooperation, WELTEC BioPower GmbH.

SOIL VAPOR AND LEACHATE WATER TREATMENT AT SUVILAHTI GAS PLANT, HELSINKI

Helsinki’s first industrial area Suvilahti in Sörnäinen is going through a massive change as it is molding into a new residential area after 100 years of industrial use. The new Suvilahti will have apartments, office buildings and parks. Before starting the constructions, the area’s contaminated soil needs to be cleansed from fuels and different sort of industrial chemicals.

Doranova has worked as a subcontractor since 2009 for Biomaa Ltd which is the main contractor in Suvilahti. Doranova is responsible for executing the soil vapor field and pumping station, groundwater treatment and remediation of the water stored inside two old gasometers. The main unwanted substances in the groundwater of Suvilahti area are VOC and PAH compounds. These compounds are removed using activated carbon filtration and oxidation. Also heavy hydrocarbons were found from the two gasometers. These hydrocarbons were separated from the water and transported to toxic waste disposal plant.

Biological anaerobic in situ remediation AT Philips lighting Mäntsälä factory

Since 2004 Doranova has been executing Finland’s first so called anaerobic dehalogenation. This biological remediation technique has been applied in wide area in the surroundings of the factory. Steam washing of protection creams and lubricants from metal objects with trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene has been practiced in the factory for decades. When the premises were bought by Philips in 1994 very high concentration of trichloroethylene was found from the areas groundwater. After this some of the private wells in the area were prohibited to use.

Doranova started full-scale biological remediation in 2009 and the results have been very positive. The whole process is based on adding liquid nutrient to speed up activity of bacteria that dissolves the unwanted substances. The bacteria dissolve the unwanted substances to less harmful or completely harmless substances.

The aim of the project is to treat the groundwater so that concentration of the unwanted substances would be on risk-free level by 2013.

Water treatment system for TallinN international airport

Doranova delivered water treatment system to Tallinn’s international airport in 2008. The system handles all the waters of the airport, the main unwanted substances are glycol, oil and airplane fuel. This big water treatment system was delivered with six trucks and it includes phase separator, oil and glycol separation system and integrated collector tank. The system was delivered and installed when the airport was reconstructed and extended by an Estonian construction company AS Eesti Ehitus.

SOIL washing of contaminated soils in the old railroad station area at Lielahti, Tampere

Today in the old station area of Lielahti stands a cosy residential area unlike less than 10 years ago when soil of the station area was severely contaminated by an old scrap yard. Doranova remediated Lielahti’s contaminated soil from mineral oil and heavy metals in 2004 by using on-site wet sorting technique, being the first one to use this specific technique in Finland.

When comparing to the traditional excavation (changing of the soil) wet sorting technique taking place on-site is ecological and more cost effective way to remediate the soil. Wet sorting technique also gives the opportunity to save gravel and minimize the use of space in landfills. The 16 000 tons of soil in Lielahti would have needed 800 truckloads if the soil would have been changed. When using the wet sorting technique only 20 truckloads of traffic was created.

Landfill productivity system for Rosk'n Roll landfill at Lohja

Rosk´n Roll Ltd is a waste management company that has a landfill in western part of the Uusima region (city of Lohja) representing modern, environmental impact minimizing and energy self-sufficiency maximizing ideology. In 2007 Rosk´n Roll ordered Doranova’s landfill productivity system that supports the company’s environmentally friendly concept.

Rosk’n Roll’s landfill gas burning-torch was replaced with micro turbine that exploits the collected gas in electricity and heat production. The created electricity was utilized in landfill’s buildings and equipment. The heat created is now used to heat a building where the landfill’s other main component, reverse osmosis is located. Reverse osmosis is a method offered by Doranova to treat landfill’s leachated waters.  The reverse osmosis system in Lohja handles 10m3 of leachate water in an hour and separates clean water from dirty concentrate. The productivity system was built in fast phase and we delivered the project only three months after starting the work.
